Meditation: Buddhism, Science and Common Sense
Thursday, August 7, 7pm
Buddha explained in the sutras that anxiety, fear and suffering arise when our minds are overpowered by thoughts and emotions. To address this problem, Buddha taught that through focusing and training the mind, we can go beyond suffering and gain true spiritual insight. Now, more than 2500 years later, modern science appears to be coming to a similar conclusion.
In this slightly irreverent look at modern science and Buddhism, Erric Solomon will discuss the convergent insights of these ancient and modern traditions. In addition, to give everyone an experiential taste of what is being discussed, Erric will lead a guided meditation.
Erric Solomon, a former software executive from Silicon Valley, is an experienced Buddhist meditator. Under Sogyal Rinpoche’s guidance, Erric developed “What Meditation Really Is,” a ground breaking, international Buddhist meditation program. Erric is frequently invited to give talks on meditation at Buddhist centers, universities and corporations both in the U.S. and Europe. In 2009 he completed a traditional three year Tibetan Buddhist retreat in Lerab Ling, France.
